The discourse seminar: power, truth, critique

Description

The discourse seminar - call for interest

Are you interested in the study of discourse? This online seminar is open for graduate students and early-career researchers who want to deepen their theoretical understanding of discourse and to develop their discourse research projects. We started in fall 2024 and our discussions centred on the question of truth and critique.

In this new cycle, we will build on these discussions and focus on the question of power, truth and critique. The core group consists of Irene Ktori, Michael Schmidlehner, Thiago Augusto Pereira, Adel Tayebi, Johannes Angermuller. Members of the group work on ideas such as the discursive construction of technology (Adel), family policies (Irene) truth and post-truth discourse (Johannes), environment and psychoanalysis (Michael), right-wing book publishers (Thiago).

In order to participate, you will fulfil the following four conditions:

1) You are a motivated early-career researcher working on a topic relevant to this area.
2) You want to  commit to preparing and attending a bi-weekly seminar of around two hours. This will mean regular involvement, reading some texts and also presenting your own work.
3) You will be available to meet for the two kick-off meetings open to all on Friday, September 19 and 26 2-4pm (London time). Everybody can join the kick-off meeting and the group webpage but the number of seminar places is limited to around ten people.

In order to become a regular seminar member, you will need to send your expression of interest to Johannes Angermuller (johannes.angermuller@open.ac.uk) with an idea of your background (possibly a CV), your research ideas (a proposal if available) and how you might relate and contribute to the seminar. We will consider all applications around September 30. If you are admitted, you will commit to attending the seminar twice a month on a Friday afternoon until December.

If you are interested in this seminar, please go to the group webpage (https://discourseanalysis.net/discourseseminar) and sign up as soon as you can. You will need to create a user account on the platform (http://www.discourseanalysis.net) and after a few days you will sign in and go to the group webpage and click on join. The programme and readings will be posted on the group webpage.

Once the group is established, regular attendance will be key to the success of this group. All participants agree to being recorded. The archives of past seminars can be found here.

We'll be happy to hear from you.

Johannes Angermuller (Open University, UK and DiscourseNet) together with Irene Ktori, Michael Schmidlehner, Thiago Augusto Pereira, Adel Tayebi.
