ESRC seminar on ‘Queering ESOL: towards a cultural politics of LGBT issues in the ESOL classroom’. We are pleased to announce the second in the series of six events, to be hosted at the University of Leeds. Seminar Title: Sexual Migration and the ESOL Classroom Saturday 29th March, University of Leeds, Leeds, 10.00am – 5.00pm ‘Sexual Migration and the ESOL Classroom’ is the second in a series of six ESRC-funded seminars exploring LGBT issues in the ESOL classroom, held across the Institute of Education, the University of Leeds, and King’s College London. This seminar, hosted by the University of Leeds, will address the phenomenon of sexual migration and explores the complex trajectories of sexual migrants and asylum seekers and how these complex identities impact on ESOL provisions as they respond to evolving legal frameworks. Speakers and sessions: - Holly R. Cashman ( University of New Hampshire, USA) Queer Latinidad in the US: Identities, communities and language practices - Calo Giametta (London Metropolitan University) Sexuality as a rights-claiming object and the politics of humanitarianism - Richard Mole (School of Slavonic and East European Studies, UCL) Russian LGBT migrants in Berlin: between the ethno-national and the queer diasporas - S. Chelvan, Barrister (No5 Chambers) How can I prove who I am? Examining the barriers and hurdles which face the LGBTI refugee The seminar is free, but places are limited. ESOL practitioners, research students and LGBT activists can apply for funding to attend.
