Pieter Maeseele (PhD Ghent University) is Associate Research Professor at the Department of Communication Studies, University of Antwerp (Belgium), where he is vice-chair of the research group Media, Policy & Culture . As media sociologist, his research and teaching focus on the relation between media and democracy, and more specifically in what ways media and popular culture contribute to democratic debate, citizenship and pluralism. His primary focus is on news and journalism, and on how both professional and alternative forms of journalism report on issues of public significance and what that teaches us about media pluralism in the 21st century. Recently, this also includes attention for the role and performance of popular culture, and particularly late-night political satire television and long form television drama.
