Session on Language Testing, Exclusion and Race

Dear colleagues

on behalf of the EDIA working group at the Open University, it is my pleasure to invite you to our next Language Matters session on Language Testing, Exclusion and Racetoday, Monday, 20 May 2024, from 3.00 p.m. - 4.30 p.m. (BST; UTC+1). We will hear Kamran Khan (Associate Professor in Language, Social Justice and Education, University of Birmingham, UK), who will discuss the idea of the 'shibboleth' and how it places a question above racialised others. Shibboleths manifest through language tests or forms of profiling which can be harmful and exclusionary. Klaus-Dieter Rossade (Senior Lecturer in Languages and Applied Linguistics, The Open University, UK), will discuss Khan's ideas in the light of Higher Education assessment policies and practices. Everybody's welcome. Please find a Teams link below.

Best wishes

Jaspal
