A Conference promoted by: the Centre of Studies on Europe (TO-EU), the Centro di Studi Americani ed Euro-Americani “Piero Bairati”, the American Studies Association of Italy (AISNA)

We are looking for individual and/or group proposals for papers  from both historians and linguists on the current Euro-American relations, with a focus on   Donald Trump’s  administration, but also looking at the period between the end of the Cold War and the crisis of the Atlantic policy, a period covering the   thirty years between 1989 and 2019. The US-Europe relations have been crucial in the history of both the US and European nations in cultural, social, political  and   military    terms. While there have been some important moments of crisis in the long history of the US-Europe relations, it is clear that Donald Trump’s election as US President and the new threats to the political and economic cohesion within the EU have brought these relations to a totally new state    of tension.  Papers may address one or more key issues which are relevant to Euro-American relations today, including:

-Discourses of nationalisms and populisms;
-The role of multilateral    institutions (e.g. the EU, NATO, the UN) and the perceived loss of their importance;
-The role played by mass media and social media in the construction of the public sphere and the circulation of ideas and languages between Europe and the US
-Discourses of immigration, fear, security;
-Market, protectionism and fair trade.
