Disinformation is commonly discussed through a set of dominant narratives, such as the claim that we live in a post-factual era, that we are witnessing an unprecedented boom of disinformation and conspiracy theories, that disinformation is the main driver of societal polarization, or that language itself is losing its meanings. Regardless of the empirical validity of these narratives, disinformation and conspiracy theories have become a central topic across many scientific disciplines.

The Alter-lives of Independence Movements: Frustrated Hopes, Renewed Utopias

Decades after formal decolonisation, anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism have remained a wellspring of inspiration and contestation. Studies about anticolonial thought, the 1955 Bandung Conference, and transcontinental solidarity movements have proliferated in academia and activist networks, providing the basis of theories and practices of resistance in contemporary times. Nevertheless, the ideas and the movements they inspired did not perish with the epoch that produced them.

In addition to regular research seminars, Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics runs a series which sheds light on forensic linguistics from an interdisciplinary perspective. The next in the series is the Forensic Linguistics and History Symposium on 7th November 2025, 13:00-17:00 UK time.

The Sixth Helsinki Conference on Emotions, Populism and Polarisation (HEPP6) will be held 18-20 May 2026 at the University of Helsinki and online. The call for papers and panel proposals is open until 31 October 2025.
