Language, Discourses, and Symbols of violence and peace in Gaza, Israel, and Palestine
DiscourseNet is standing in solidarity and compassion with all those who are directly or indirectly suffering from these violent escalations. We condemn all acts of violence and violations of human rights. We are concerned about the way the conflict is going to be instrumentalised for different political ends at the cost of lives and livelihoods of the people in the region.
As discourse researchers we stand in solidarity with all who have been working for peace and human rights in the region. We are aware about the power of discourses in the current events. Texts, images, films distributed worldwide via traditional and social media are shaping discourses and our ‘view’ on the region, the people, their struggles, as well as attitudes, opinions, and policies worldwide.
DiscourseNet encourages critical research to monitor the current conflict and its effects on politics, communities, and culture worldwide. We invite researchers from different countries and research communities to contribute to a workshop. We are inviting all who are interested mainly in listening and unlearning. Explicitly, we welcome those colleagues who need support against persecution, devastation, discrimination, repression and war.
In order to develop a discourse-analytical point of view on the conflict, we invite empirical analyses of concrete discursive artefacts, such as images, texts, symbols, speeches. This discourse analysis can be elaborated from any theoretical or methodological perspective. Accepted abstracts will be invited to contribute a talk of ten to fifteen minutes during the online workshop. Given the controversial and politically loaded topic, we want to emphasize our desire for an agonistic and spirited discussion, without antagonistic or inimical confrontations. The organizers reserve the right to refuse or remove any contribution which they feel does not live up to this ethos.
