Cities are complex and ever contradicting symbolic worlds and, therefore, serve as prototypical exam-ples of multimodal space(s). Many recent publica-tions on written signs and semiotic theories of (ur-ban) space in particular have discussed this multi-faceted issue (e.g. Landry/Bourhis 1997, Scollon/Scollon 2003, Backhaus 2007, Jawor-ski/Thurlow 2010, Warnke 2013). Especially the field of Urban Linguistics (Busse und Warnke 2014) has contributed to this debate by including not only all linguistic aspects of the city in an urban model but also its multimodal features.
Thus, urban space is not a mere parameter of lin-guistic variation but, in this case, language and all other semiotic formations (be they road signs, litera-ture, facebook comments, pinterest pins, songs, historic maps of cities or even dialects, advertising and image campains of, in and/or about cities, artis-tic interventions or cultures of memory etc.) are first and foremost viewed as parameters of declarative acts constituting urbanity, of urban meanings and, more generally speaking, of urban worlds.
The symposium sets out to explore the city as medi-ated representation and to simultaneously analyse forms, functions and effects of multimodal semiotic formations, which also always have to be under-stood as historically motivated. This question lends itself to considering how stable or variable multi-modal urban signs are or can be, and moreover en-compasses the discussion of how the multimodal city can adequately be analysed by means of inter-disciplinary theoretical models. In addition, the symposium seeks to examine and further develop quantitative and qualitative methods that enhance the process of integrating the diverse range of heterogeneous signs.
The symposium is interdisciplinary by nature and invites contributions and topics from the fields of linguistics, literary and cultural studies, sociology, architecture as well as all related disciplines that focus on sign-based processes of urban communi-cation.
The symposium relies on discussions of past USRN forums (see www.usrn.de) but is always open to new submissions and welcomes all researchers who are interested in contributing to the network’s work.

Städte sind komplexe und widersprüchliche Zei-chenwelten und damit ein Prototyp des multimodalen Raums. In zahlreichen neueren schriftbezogenen Ansätzen und vor allem semiotischen Theorien zum (urbanen) Raum (Landry/Bourhis 1997, Scol-lon/Scollon 2003, Backhaus 2007, Jaworski/Thurlow 2010, Warnke 2013) wird dies vielschichtig diskutiert, insbesondere auch in den Urban Linguistics (Busse und Warnke 2014), die alle sprachbezogenen Aspekte der Stadt in einem urbanen Modell auch und besonders unter Einschluss ihrer multimodalen Erscheinungen erfasst. Urbaner Raum ist hier nicht nur Parameter für sprachliche Variation, sondern Sprache und alle weiteren zeichengebundenen Formationen (seien dies Straßenschilder, Literatur, facebook-Kommentare, pinterest Pins, Songs, historische Stadt- oder gar Dialektkarten, Werbe- und Städteim-agekampagnen von, in und/oder über Städte, künst-lerische Interventionen in de Stadt, Erinnerungskultur u.v.a.m.) werden in erster Linie als Parameter der deklarativen Konstituierung von Urbanität, von stadtgebundenen Bedeutungen und urbaner Welt verstanden.
Das Symposion hat zum Ziel, die Stadt als mediale Repräsentation in den Blick zu nehmen und dabei Formen, Funktionen und Effekte vor allem multimo-daler und immer auch historisch motivierter Zeichen-formationen zu analysieren. Diese Fragestellung schließt die Erörterung von Stabilität und Wandel von multimodalen urbanen Zeichenträgern ebenso ein wie eine Diskussion über adäquate interdisziplinäre Theoriemodelle zur Analyse der multimodalen Stadt. Außerdem sollen Methoden zur quantitativen und qualitativen Integration einer Vielzahl von heterogenen Zeichenträgern diskutiert und entwickelt werden.
Die Perspektive des Symposions ist interdisziplinär und berücksichtigt Themen aus den Bereichen der Linguistik, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft, Soziologie, Architektur und allen benachbarten Disziplinen, sofern sie einen Fokus auf zeichenbasierte Prozesse der urbanen Kommunikation haben.
Das Symposion setzt die Diskussionen des USRN der letzten Jahren fort (vgl. www.usrn.de), es ist aber prinzipiell geöffnet für neue Beiträge und Vortragende, die herzlich zur Teilnahme eingeladen sind.
