Alexis Chapelan is currently a PhD student, enrolled in a joint international PhD program at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris, France) and the University of Bucharest (Romania). He is also a Research Assistant at the Technische Universitat Berlin and the Zentrum for Antisemitismusforschung (ZfA), working on the international project „Decoding Antisemitism“.
He is mainly interested in exploring the intersection of intellectual history/history of ideas and sociolinguistics, applied to research objects such as political extremism, far-right ideologies, hate speech and populism. His thesis draws on the Begriffsgeschichte and semantic history approaches, and will be focusing on the history of the concept of "culture wars" from the 19th century to present-day debates.
