The language of the manosphere: Global perspectives

We are calling for extended abstracts of 1,500 words (including references) for a special issue of the journal Critical Discourse Studies on the language of the manosphere. In particular, though not exclusively, we seek contributions that examine the language of the manosphere and its influence and spread in non-Anglo-American contexts and in languages other than English. This work is currently underrepresented/underreported in the academic literature. The due date for abstracts is 1 December 2024.

The manosphere is a loose online network of different groups – including involuntary celibates (incels), self-styled pick-up artists or seduction experts, male separatists and men’s rights activists – that share anti-feminist and misogynist beliefs. To date, the language and discourse of the manosphere has been mostly researched for Western, especially North American, contexts (e.g., Krendel et al. 2022, Dayter and Rüdiger 2022, Heritage 2023, Koller et al. 2023, Krendel 2023). With this special issue, we intend to give an up-to-date overview of the state of the art of linguistic research into the manosphere but with two distinct aims designed to address problems with previous research. These aims are:

Broadening the focus of linguistic research on the manosphere to non-Anglo-American and non-Anglophone contexts
Positing positive interventions that address problems raised through research into manosphere communities and language. (How) can critical research help members of these communities as well those negatively impacted by these communities?

In doing so, we acknowledge that what is known as the “manosphere” in Anglo-American contexts may manifest differently elsewhere. However, networked online misogyny is likely to be a global phenomenon, and groups using absolute statements, dehumanising metaphors, in-group vocabulary and pseudo-science to refer to women and men may be found in many various cultures.

We therefore especially, but not exclusively, encourage contributions from outside Anglo-American contexts. We are further interested in quantitative and/or qualitative studies and in research on multimodal features of the manosphere. However, all papers should include detailed linguistic analysis of authentic data.

The 1,500-word abstract should mention the study’s focus and research question(s), contain a brief literature review as well as detail on data and methods, provide indicative findings and discuss what implications the study has for effecting positive change. Alman Dili ve Edebiyatı Dergisi – Studien zur deutschen Sprache und Literatur (Journal of German Language and Literature) is a peer-reviewed international academic journal founded in 1954 by Istanbul University’s Department of German Language and Literature. It is published biannually (June & December).

Alman Dili ve Edebiyatı Dergisi – Studien zur deutschen Sprache und Literatur is indexed in Elsevier SCOPUS, Web of Science Clarivate Analytics Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), Erih Plus, MIAR, MLA International Bibliography, EBSCO Communication Source, EBSCO Central & Eastern European Academic Source, Proquest, DOAJ, TR-INDEX (ULAKBIM) andSOBIAD. The journal accepts articles written in one of the following languages: German, English and Turkish.

For the new issue we call for papers related to German language and literature and from the fields of study on topics mentioned above. The manuscripts should be formatted according to the 6th edition of the APA. Articles for submission must be previously unpublished and should not be under evaluation or in the process of being published for another journal. Two 200-250 words abstracts for the article should be submitted in the original language and in English. In addition, an extended abstract of 600-800 words in English should also be attached at the beginning of the article. For the articles written in English an extended abstract is not necessary. All submissions will be (double-blind) peer-reviewed.

The deadline for submitting articles is January 17, 2025.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
We are pleased to invite all researchers from Latin America and other regions and continents to the XVI ALED INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS. This is a special edition that will celebrate the 30th anniversary of ALED's founding, a time to reflect on contemporary discursivities, research networks, and the challenges emerging today in the field of discourse studies and language sciences, embracing the interdisciplinarity that has always been the essence of discourse studies.

The central theme, resistance, allows for a plural and essential reflection on the challenges of the present world, including political transformations, climate change, the advancement of digital communication, and, paraphrasing Michel Foucault, the powers and dangers that come with these new discursive forms and practices, their emergence, exercise, and order. In this sense, discourse studies play an important role in understanding the various socio-linguistic phenomena at stake, involving resistance, discursive confrontations, setbacks, and advances.

Bring your contribution to this great debate that will undoubtedly be part of the history of discourse studies in Latin America and the world. The XVI ALED International Congress aims to foster research development and scientific exchange in the spirit of an open, democratic, critical, and pluralistic society. Discussions will be enriched by the presence of researchers from various regions, countries, institutions, and international research networks, as well as the expected contribution from different areas of knowledge, given the interdisciplinarity of discourse studies and the chosen theme.

1. DATE and LOCATION
The UFMG – Federal University of Minas Gerais, located in the city of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, was chosen to host the XVI ALED International Congress. The congress will be held from July 8 to 11, 2025. BELO HORIZONTE, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, is a modern and welcoming city. Minas Gerais, known for its baroque historic cities and as an intellectual and literary hub in Brazil, is also a land of resistance and historical memory marked by the Inconfidência Mineira, represented by the national hero, Tiradentes. July is wintertime in Minas Gerais, with mild temperatures, usually clear blue skies, and no rain, a great opportunity to explore and appreciate the mountains and hills surrounding Belo Horizonte and its surroundings.

2. A PLURAL AND NECESSARY THEME
"Discourses of Resistance, Networks of Meaning, and Discursive Diversities in a Digital and Non-Digital World"

Although the congress is open to transversal topics not necessarily linked to the central theme, the theme seeks to stimulate problematizations, focusing on dimensions considered important in contemporary times:

Resistance as a relevant dimension of social discourses in action, a theme that, as we will try to show in Annex I accompanying this circular, encompasses a plurality of possibilities for intervention, reflection, and research.
Networks of meaning, a subtopic addressing the problem of the social and dialogical construction of language and the meanings produced within and between discursive communities.
Discursive diversities, a subtheme that embraces the great plurality of devices, genres, and models of communication situations in which discourses are manifested, structured, and structured.
Digital discourses, expanding globally as a fascinating universe for research and language practices, structuring new discursive practices, forms of social action, discourse circulation, manipulations, and public and political challenges of all kinds.

This set of guiding topics will allow the congress to host different reflections on the modes of discourse constitution, circulation, interaction, configuration, influence, regulation, and incitement to action. We understand that by fostering such problematizations, ALED, as a scientific society, and Discourse Analysis, as an (inter)disciplinary field, contribute to the construction of more critical societies open to democratic debate. Read the theoretical description of the central theme at the end of this circular (Annex I).

3. ACADEMIC STRUCTURE OF THE CONGRESS
To foster discussions that ensure an understanding of Discourse Analysis, whether in an internal relationship with linguistic border disciplines or an external location with disciplines that have sought DA, or in addressing conceptual and methodological problems, the symposium has been structured with various integrated activities:

PLENARY SESSIONS: Reserved for invited speakers of the XVI International Congress. These will focus on reflecting on the problems, challenges, and alternatives that have shaped the theoretical and methodological development of DA, as well as its application and/or problematization of the event's theme. The invited and confirmed speakers will be announced soon.
ROUNDTABLES: Comprised of 3 invited researchers from the XVI ALED International Congress, these roundtables will especially discuss: (i) international plenaries from ALED research networks, presenting ongoing studies, (ii) invited national and international speakers, leaders of emerging research with theoretical-methodological interfaces on digital discourses, and more.
COORDINATED COMMUNICATIONS: Proposed by professors with PhDs, members of ALED, with 4 participants. These will focus especially on: (i) presentations from research group coordinators, mapping and describing research groups at Latin American universities (assessment, dominant perspectives, research results, and defended theses); (ii) communications proposed by research leaders from different institutions on related topics, network research, etc. Professors may invite graduate students to participate.
INDIVIDUAL COMMUNICATIONS: Proposed by PhD researchers or graduate students on the event's theme or related axes listed below.
POSTER: Open to undergraduate students (or high school students in junior research programs) who wish to present their research findings in discourse studies.
Mini-Courses: Given by invited speakers.
Thesis and Dissertation Contest, according to a specific call that will be announced later.
Book Launches: Authors can register their works on the event's website.
Book Fair: Featuring major commercial and university publishers.
Cultural Program
ALED's 30th Anniversary Exhibition: Images, testimonies, publications, memories, etc.

The III. International Social Sciences Congress of the Faculty of Letters Congist’24, titled “Social Sciences and Artificial Intelligence: Theory and Practice,” will be held on
December 18-20, 2024. This year, the theme of Congist’24 will explore the relationship between artificial intelligence and social sciences, with a pioneering institute on AI research Erasmus University Rotterdam School of Philosophy as our partner institution. In today’s world, the use of AI influences various aspects of our lives and directly reshaping social structures. Its inclusion in areas such as political and ethical debates, as well as its impacts on creation, distribution, and utilization of scientific knowledge highlights its profound effects. The congress aims to examine the relationship between social sciences and artificial intelligence extensively, bringing together the diverse approaches based on participants’ areas of expertise and interdisciplinary perspectives. Through this congress, we will explore both the positive and negative impacts of AI and by examining both its potentialities and limitations, we aim to provide an extensive framework for understanding how digital tools and artificial intelligence are transforming social sciences, including their influence on the production and accumulation of knowledge, and their broader impact on reshaping social sciences. Accordingly,

The congress will feature presentations of esteemed speakers renowned in AI and the social sciences, covering current debates, practices, and theoretical frameworks regarding the relationship between AI technologies and the social sciences.
There will be sessions open to suggestions for panel discussions and other thematic sessions, in addition to the titles presented below. The paper abstracts will be accepted after peer review and published as an e-book prior to the congress.
Following the editorial selection process, the presented papers will be compiled according to their relevant scientific field and published by Istanbul University Press. Istanbul University Press is an international publishing house, and the published books are indexed by the Web of Science Book Citation Index.
