This course offers a practical introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). While the course covers key theoretical assumptions and concepts, our focus will be on how to do critical discourse analysis. Specifically, students will be introduced to different approaches to critical discourse analysis and how these approaches may be applied and combined. The course centers on three forms of discourse that are key in solidifying and defying power relations: media discourse, political-institutional discourse, and social movement discourse. However, the theoretical knowledge and practical focus of the course are also applicable to research examining other forms of discourse.

This course is particularly recommended for graduate students and researchers interested in the role of language and visual communication in constructing, maintaining, and challenging power relations. This is an introductory course and does not require previous formation in discourse analysis. However, given its practical focus, this course is also recommended for students and researchers familiar with CDA approaches who would like to strengthen their analytical methods and skills.

Apart from online class sessions, the course includes asynchronous participation with previously assigned readings and a final group activity. Class sessions will be supported by Zoom Meetings and asynchronous participation with readings and other course materials will be supported by Perusall.

This course is organized and taught by Lucía de la Presa (Centre of Discourse Studies). The last session of the course includes a Master Class in Discourse and Ideology by Teun van Dijk.

COURSE BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE

The course aims to discuss two methods in the field of discourse studies: Discourse-theoretical analysis (DTA) and Discursive-material analysis (DMA). Both are grounded in so-called high theory, with discourse theory as its main starting point, but with elements of actor-network theory and new materialism. This course will start with an introduction to these theoretical models but will then move on to their analytical deployment in communication and media studies research.

Special attention will be spent on the creation of a theory-grounded analytical model to guide the research. Apart from attending lectures, participants will be expected to participate in both theoretical and research-driven workshops.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

have a deeper understanding of the field of discourse studies and, in particular, of its discourse-theoretical component;
have a deeper understanding of the theoretical relationship between the discursive and the material;
know how to translate discourse-theoretical models into analytical practice through the use of the notion of the sensitising concept (applied to discourse theory and to discourse-theoretical rereading of other theories);
set up an analytical model for a discourse-theoretical analysis and a discursive-material analysis.

TEACHING AND EVALUATION

The one-week course will be organised in 10 teaching slots, combining lectures and workshops. These workshops are partially theoretical (presenting an article or chapter) and partially research-driven (presenting an analytical model).

A certificate (with a grade “Pass”) is given after 1) attendance of a minimum of 8 meetings, 2) a working group theoretical presentation, and 3) an individual case study presentation.

A total number of 20 participant slots are available. The participation fee is 50 euros and only covers course attendance. Participants are required to pay themselves for their travel and accommodation costs, and all other expenses.

A central claim of discourse theory is that meaning, subjectivity, and agency are constructed within relational structures that are shaped and re-shaped through political struggle. This course introduces the basic concepts of poststructuralist discourse theory, understood as a distinctive, qualitative approach to critical empirical research. The course situates this approach in relation to competing approaches to social and political analysis that take discourse and meaning seriously, and contextualises it also in relation to key debates in the philosophy of natural and social science.

The main aim of the course, however, is to address the challenging question of ‘applying’ discourse theory to empirical phenomena in the name of understanding, explanation, and critique. Drawing inspiration from poststructuralism and psychoanalysis, it serves as a forum to discuss research strategies that are consonant with the field of discourse theory, and outlines conceptual frameworks that can be employed in the analysis of concrete discourses and practices. A range of concepts and themes are examined with particular reference to the work of thinkers such as Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, Antonio Gramsci, Michel Foucault, and Slavoj Žižek. Such concepts and themes are considered from the point of view of methodology and research strategy, and include discourse and practice, hegemony and antagonism, politics and dislocation, performativity and subjectivity, fantasy and ideology, democracy and populism.

This course provides the conceptual and methodological means to use discourse analysis in the conduct of empirical and theoretical research, where the aims of the approach are to understand, characterize, explain, and criticize problematized social phenomena. It serves as a forum to discuss research strategies that are consonant with the field of poststructuralist discourse theory, and outlines an approach that can be employed in the analysis of concrete discourses.

More precisely, the course puts forward an approach to critical explanation, which comprises five basic elements: problematization; retroduction; logics; articulation; critique and normative evaluation. Building on Michel Foucault’s method of problematization, Laclau and Mouffe’s post-Marxist logics of discourse analysis and various psychoanalytic ideas drawn from Freud, Lacan and Žižek we seek to investigate the meanings and theoretical role of a wide range of themes and concepts such as: critique, ideology, hegemony, antagonism, radical democracy, populism, commons and prefigurative politics, neoliberalism, health and social care, subjectivity and the digital.

Such concepts and themes are considered from the point of view of methodology and research strategy, examining the philosophical underpinnings of a poststructuralist approach to social and political analysis and grappling with their operationalisation through a range of empirical cases to illustrate broad methodological and theoretical points.

The Odesa Centre for Disinformation Studies (OCDS) will organize the 1st OCDS International Winter School on Disinformation in Modern World Politics.

The meeting will be organised online, and the preliminary dates are scheduled for February 17-19, 2025. All lectures at the OCDS International Winter School are held in English.

The Winter School aims to explore the influence of disinformation technologies and practice in current world politics, in particular, tracking the Russian disinformation and propaganda strategy worldwide, examining the risks and threats of the further spreading of misleading narratives of Russia, and discovering the world practice in combating propaganda and disinformation.

The goals of the School are, on the one hand, to increase awareness among the expert community over the methods and methodological approaches in studying disinformation in world politics and, on the other – to involve youth in the general expert’s discussion on propaganda, disinformation and narratives as a tool of the foreign policy.

The primary audience of the workshop is the community of experts, Master's and PhD students.

Description of Media Representations and Research Methods Summer School

How do you make sense of the wide variety of perspectives in the media? For example, how can we interpret newspaper coverage of the War in Ukraine, tweets by Elon Musk, or Instagram posts on climate change, food, and migration?

This course offers you academic yet practical answers to these questions. It teaches you the analytical skills to study the possible meanings of textual and visual media representations.

Interactive lectures raise your understanding of concepts and methods, helping you examine what combinations of words and/or visual elements could mean in terms of a broader debate in society. These lectures further teach you how national identities and power relations affect the interpretations of media representations.

Your individual assignment concerns a short paper, in which you apply a method to study one or two news articles, short YouTube videos, or social media posts. You will write and present this paper during this two-week course.

Exclusively for this Summer School, Dr. Leonhardt van Efferink developed a template that helps you write a well-structured course paper. On top of this, he offers individual feedback in class and active personal tutoring by e-mail. Finally, his support includes a comprehensive framework to develop focused, consistent, and transparent research questions.

Goals of Media Representations and Research Methods Summer School

Write a well-structured research paper in which you study media representations with textual and/or visual elements (e.g., newspaper/magazine articles with photos, cartoons, and Instagram/Twitter posts).
Develop a research method that draws on critical discourse analysis, social semiotic analysis, and/or news framing analysis, in line with your research objectives.

The course uses case examples to illustrate broad methodological and theoretical points, from general considerations regarding qualitative methods appropriate to poststructuralist discourse theory, to more focused considerations of rhetorical, ethnographic, participatory, and psycho-social dimensions of research, including the place and role of the analyst in the process of research.

As part of this course participants are invited to present their own research topics and proposals.

PhD projects of the Schaufler Kolleg will approach the guiding theme "Data↔Worlds" from ethical,social, legal, political, socio-economic, historical, media, didactic, linguistic, literary, educational and aesthetic perspectives. Each research associate position is affiliated with the Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden. The workplace is located in the lab’s offices. PhD projects will be supervised by one or more members of the TU Dresden according to the PhD degree regulations of the respective faculty at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The PhD supervisor is also the immediate superior. Additional interdisciplinary training and mentoring takes place in the Lab. Within this framework, qualification opportunities and mentorships from scientists from the STEM subjects are offered for the PhD project.
Tasks:
- prepare and execute an independent PhD project within the professional and conceptual framework of the Schaufler Lab
- actively and regularly participate in the graduate school’s training program and on-site Schaufler Lab events
- cooperate with and do research on collaborations with artists of the Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden program
- publish and present research results on workshops and conferences
- communicate research findings to a broader audience, such as cultural and educational institutions
- take part in the organization of the graduate school (co-organization of workshops and conferences, contributions to annual reports, participation in program planning, etc.).

In addition to the usual application documents in German or English (letter of motivation, CV, copy of degree certificate, language certificates, where required), please prepare an exposé of no more than 20,000 characters outlining the planned doctoral project with a relevant and original question within the framework of the guiding theme "Data↔Worlds" and explaining its scientific and social relevance as well as a concept for its implementation. Interdisciplinary projects are particularly desired, also as cooperations of humanities and social sciences with STEM subjects. The exposé should also specifically name the possible supervisors at the TU Dresden.
