The aim of this course is to introduce and deepen the understanding of employing an anti-essentialist perspective in research. After an introductory overview of three contemporary post-structuralist approaches – assemblage thinking, discourse theory and governmentality studies – the course deepens discussions on topics such as: How can relevant research problems be articulated? What is the role of normativity in designing a study? How can analytical clarity and persuasion be achieved? How can research be disseminated in impactful ways? In more theoretical terms, this means that we emphasize the linkages between ontology, epistemology and methodology for designing, conducting and critiquing anti-foundational research.

SUMMARY OF KEY THEMES

The relationship between ontology, epistemology, and methodology in anti-essentialist reseach.
Major anti-essentialist perspectives, such as discourse theory, governmentality studies, and assemblage thinking
Epistemological questions of normativity, problematization, analytical clarity, research relevance, and impact

The course is particularly suited for doctoral students seeking to strengthen the theoretical and methodological foundations of critical and anti-essentialist research.

APPLICATION AND FEE

The course is limited to 10 participants.

To apply, simply write a maximum 1 page letter where you briefly describe your background, research interests and in what way the course would benefit your work. Participants will be selected based on the relevance of the course to the applicant’s research interests and needs, as well as with the aim of composing a dynamic and diverse study group that supports fruitful academic exchange.

Fee: The cost of the course is 1200 SEK and will cover lunches, coffee and one joint dinner during the meet up.

On-site meeting
Prominent invited lectures, seminars, and participant presentations during a three-day meet up in Karlstad, Sweden in august 26-28.
Writing phase
After the on-site meeting, participants write an individual course paper (approximately 5,000 words) applying the course content to their own PhD project. The paper will be presented and discussed at an online seminar.

CREDITS AND CERTIFICATION

The course can either be finalized after step 1 and 2 for 5 credits, or after all steps for 7,5 ECTS credits. A signed certificate of completion can be issued for those who need it in order to register credits at their home departments.

This course introduces and deepens participants’ understanding of critical policy analysis, with a particular focus on Carol Bacchi’s What is the Problem Represented to be? (WPR) framework. The course is developed in collaboration with Carol Bacchi who also will be active (digitally) both at the meet-up and as a reader of the course papers. In addition to Bacchi’s foundational work, the course actively builds on recent publications and involves researchers who have been working with the WPR approach critical policy analysis in different contexts for a long time.

Participants will work actively with the WPR framework and apply it to material relevant to their own research.

The epistemological and political foundations and implications of critical policy analysis
The nuts and bolts of the WPR framework
Analytical design, reflexivity, and writing when applying WPR in practice

The course is suited for doctoral students from all disciplines who seek to deepen their practical and theoretical knowledge of WPR.

A central claim of discourse theory is that meaning, subjectivity, and agency are constructed within relational structures that are shaped and re-shaped through political struggle. This course introduces the basic concepts of poststructuralist discourse theory, understood as a distinctive, qualitative approach to critical empirical research. The course situates this approach in relation to competing approaches to social and political analysis that take discourse and meaning seriously, and contextualises it also in relation to key debates in the philosophy of natural and social science.

The main aim of the course, however, is to address the challenging question of ‘applying’ discourse theory to empirical phenomena in the name of understanding, explanation, and critique. Drawing inspiration from poststructuralism and psychoanalysis, it serves as a forum to discuss research strategies that are consonant with the field of discourse theory, and outlines conceptual frameworks that can be employed in the analysis of concrete discourses and practices. A range of concepts and themes are examined with particular reference to the work of thinkers such as Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, Antonio Gramsci, Michel Foucault, and Slavoj Žižek. Such concepts and themes are considered from the point of view of methodology and research strategy, and include discourse and practice, hegemony and antagonism, politics and dislocation, performativity and subjectivity, fantasy and ideology, democracy and populism.

This course provides the conceptual and methodological means to use discourse analysis in the conduct of empirical and theoretical research, where the aims of the approach are to understand, characterize, explain, and criticize problematized social phenomena. It serves as a forum to discuss research strategies that are consonant with the field of poststructuralist discourse theory, and outlines an approach that can be employed in the analysis of concrete discourses.

More precisely, the course puts forward an approach to critical explanation, which comprises five basic elements: problematization; retroduction; logics; articulation; critique and normative evaluation. Building on Michel Foucault’s method of problematization, Laclau and Mouffe’s post-Marxist logics of discourse analysis and various psychoanalytic ideas drawn from Freud, Lacan and Žižek we seek to investigate the meanings and theoretical role of a wide range of themes and concepts such as: critique, ideology, hegemony, antagonism, radical democracy, populism, commons and prefigurative politics, neoliberalism, health and social care, subjectivity and the digital.

Such concepts and themes are considered from the point of view of methodology and research strategy, examining the philosophical underpinnings of a poststructuralist approach to social and political analysis and grappling with their operationalisation through a range of empirical cases to illustrate broad methodological and theoretical points.

However, given its practical focus, this course is also recommended for students and researchers familiar with CDA approaches who would like to strengthen their analytical methods and skills.

Apart from online class sessions, the course includes asynchronous participation with previously assigned readings and a final group activity. Class sessions will be supported by Zoom Meetings and asynchronous participation with readings and other course materials will be supported by Perusall.

This course is organized and taught by Dr. Lucía de la Presa, Professor and Coordinator of the Centre of Discourse Studies. The last session of the course includes a Master Class by Dr. Teun van Dijk, Director of the Centre of Discourse Studies and Honorary Professor of Pompeu Fabra University.

Course Background and Rationale

The course aims to discuss two methods in the field of discourse studies: Discourse-theoretical analysis (DTA) and Discursive-material analysis (DMA). Both are grounded in so-called high theory, with discourse theory as its main starting point, but with elements of actor-network theory and new materialism. This course will start with an introduction to these theoretical models but will then move on to their analytical deployment in communication and media studies research.

Special attention will be spent on the creation of a theory-grounded analytical model to guide the research. Apart from attending lectures, participants will be expected to participate in both theoretical and research-driven workshops.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

- have a deeper understanding of the field of discourse studies and, in particular, of its discourse-theoretical component;

- have a deeper understanding of the theoretical relationship between the discursive and the material;

- know how to translate discourse-theoretical models into analytical practice through the use of the notion of the sensitising concept (applied to discourse theory and to discourse-theoretical rereading of other theories);

- set up an analytical model for a discourse-theoretical analysis and a discursive-material analysis.

Teaching and Evaluation

The one-week course will be organised in 10 teaching slots, combining lectures and workshops. These workshops are partially theoretical (presenting an article or chapter) and partially research-driven (presenting an analytical model).

A certificate (with a grade “Pass”) is given after 1) attendance of a minimum of 8 meetings, 2) a working group theoretical presentation, and 3) an individual case study presentation.

Available Participant Slots and Costs

A total of 20 participant slots are available. Following the first round of applications, only a limited number of places remain.

The participation fee is 50 euros and only covers course attendance. Participants are required to pay themselves for their travel and accommodation costs, and all other expenses.
