I'm finishing off my MA at UCT in the Centre for African Studies and Linguistics. My broad research interests include language and identity, language ideologies, spiritual ideologies, authenticity and legitimacy, performance and performativity, social approaches to second language acquisition. My current dissertation is an exploration of how 18 young Capetonian adults construct their identities as Muslims through their use of Arabic. More specifically, I focus on investigating the experiences and ideologies that these young Cape Muslims have towards the relationship between Arabic, Islam and Cape Muslim Identity.
