DESIRE, the centre for the study of Democracy, Signification and Resistance (www.researchcentredesire.eu) is happy to invite PhD students to submit proposals for a one-day PhD masterclass on discourse theoretical approaches to politics, society, communication and media. The PhD masterclass will take place on 6 February 2019 in Brussels.

During the masterclass, each student will present her/his PhD project and receive in-depth feedback on theoretical and methodological aspects of the project from one of the four professors giving the masterclass. Depending on the topic, you will receive feedback from Nico Carpentier (Uppsala), Jason Glynos (Essex), David Howarth (Essex), or Yannis Stavrakakis (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). Each student will also receive feedback from one fellow doctoral student and is expected to give feedback to one fellow student. There is a 1-hour slot per PhD student.

Interested PhD students should send a document to bdecleen@vub.be including: description of the project (max 700 words), theoretical and methodological questions to be discussed (max 200 words). The deadline for applications is 10 June 2018.

Preference goes to students whose research takes a post-structuralist or post-foundationalist discursive approach, broadly defined. There is no limitation in terms of topics or disciplines.

Selected participants are expected to submit a 5-page paper on their project before 20 December 2018. This paper should include a problem statement, research questions, conceptual framework, methodological framework, empirical material, preliminary results, and a set of questions to be discussed.

Participation in the masterclass is free. Masterclass participants are expected to cover travel and accommodation costs themselves.
The masterclass is organized the day before the colloquium 'Discourse Theory: Ways Forward' (https://www.researchcentredesire.eu/discourse-theory.html), which takes place on 7-8 February. PhD students participating in the PhD masterclass can attend the colloquium for free.
