Economies, governance, life
The worldwide diffusion of mass-market commodities and digital media engage the social sciences' critical capacities in novel ways. Global processes cannot be conceptualized in isolation from technologies, infrastructures, policies and scientific knowledge. The MA program is addressing issues such as the globalization of economies, the emergence of new forms of governance, and the impact of digital technologies on communication and everyday life.
What is STS?
Science and Technology Studies (STS) represents an interdisciplinary perspective which contributes to a better understanding of technological development and economic processes in a globally networked world. Today, economies cannot be understoof in isolation from the knowledge formations and the technologies that inform and enable the practices of economic actors.
STS combines the 'practice turn' that has been prevalent in the social sciences for some time, with more recent concerns with knowledge, materiality, embodiment, affect, and the agency of non-human actors.
Learning goals
The MA introduces students to the basic concepts and most important approaches in Science and Technology Studies (STS). It acquaints students with the history and the interdisciplinary context of Science and Technology Studies, tracing theoretical shifts and taking up current debates.
Students learn to appreciate diverse debates and theoretical programs in STS, as well as in the contributing disciplines of Cultural Anthropology, Human Geography and Sociology, in order to be able to explore their links to specific research programs.
Thematic modules include insights into
infrastructures and policies (“Technologies of Governance”),
the emergence of a global economy (“Cultures and Markets”)
and the new biosciences and -technologies (“Economies of Life”).
In all of these fields, the impact of digital technologies is a major topic.
Qualifications offered
The research-intensive program is designed to deepen students' understanding of the material and discursive practices that constitute what commonly counts as 'markets', 'technology', 'expertise' and 'policies'.
Graduates are trained for employment in
Research & Development,
NGO's,
consultancy,
policy-making,
knowledge management
transnational governance.
Research Curriculum
The research curriculum is a series of four one-semester modules that spans the entire duration of the two-year Master´s Program, engaging students in a research-oriented learning process, and giving them the opportunity to develop analytical and critical skills.
The research curriculum provides students with the necessary methodological underpinnings in order to plan, conduct and evaluate their own fieldwork projects. They are introduced to a range of research options available to them, and to make informed decisions about which methods to choose from various research strategies and fieldwork settings.
Students learn to understand not only the scope of empirical research but also the political, theoretical and ethical implications of ethnographic fieldwork.
