The Department of Slavonic Studies at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena organizes a workshop on the occasion of the Day of Slavic Literacy. Its main focus lies on political discourse in the Slavic speaking countries. Linguistic study of political discourse and its genres has become an important research topic within the pragma-linguistic studies. The nature of political discourse necessarily invites to cross-disciplinary considerations which have been reflected in a great number of empirical and methodical research findings. In the last decade, the studies of political ‘text and talk’ have striven to combine qualitative and quantitative methods and to apply corpus-linguistic tools and methods. In addition, the socio-political change in the Slavic speaking countries has brought about new challenges and inspiring topics worth exploring. The main goals of the workshop are:
a.To explore the current genres of political discourse in Slavic speaking countries and to address current research issues. E.g. parliamentary discourse, presidential debates, memorial occasions, politics in the media, inter- and intra-partisan discourse. Some other issues as relevance of national identity, gender and minorities in political discourse, economy as a discourse shaping factor shall be regarded.
b.To discuss the possible theoretical and methodological approaches applicable in the current empirical research: pragmatic theories, corpus linguistics, DA, CDA, visual code analysis etc.
The event shall gather both prominent and young scholars who conduct analysis of political discourse in one or more Slavic countries.
