Quentin Skinner is Professor of the Humanities at Queen Mary University of London. He was at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton 1974-1979 and Regius Professor of History at Cambridge 1996-2008. He is the author of numerous books on political theory and modern intellectual history.
This series of public talks looks at the meaning of 'liberty' as it's been understood and argued about both historically and in contemporary society. Defining 'freedom' and 'liberty' has been a central theme for work throughout the humanities and social sciences, and despite a century or two of liberal democracy, it arguably remains as pressing an issue today as it has ever been. In this short series, we're delighted to be joined by some of the leading scholars in these debates to talk about how the words 'freedom' and 'liberty' have been used to shape our lives as a society.
