The University of Louvain (UCL) and the University of Namur (FUNDP) welcome the submission of papers for the International Conference “Towards Neo-Journalism? Redefining, Extending or Reconfiguring a Profession” to be held in Brussels on 3 and 4 October 2012. The aim of the conference is to allow researchers working on online journalism from a variety of disciplines to meet and share research experiences and findings. The conference will be complemented by workshops in the afternoon of 4 October bringing together information scholars and professionals.

PANEL "(Online) Media and Language Use":
The birth of the Internet and the spread of communication technologies that evolved with it have led to new forms of written mass media and brought to light new communication habits. Two major changes are the renaissance of opinion expression and the increase in author-reader interactivity. But – besides shifts in information processing and velocity, the inclusion of multimedia applications and the increased opportunity for writer-reader-interaction – do we also come across new modes of journalistic writing and, if so, in what way do the recent forms differ from traditional news reporting? Or is it rather true that the new media basically make use of the new technologies without featuring any changes in language use? We invite researchers investigating media discourse in traditional printed and innovative online journalism to present their results. We particularly encourage papers that address the links between authorial presence and stance and/or reader involvement in the text and one of the following domains: discourse and pragmatic markers; information structure; phraseology, collocations and formulaic language; sociolinguistic variation; contrastive and cross-linguistic studies; methodological issues.
