The organizers of this conference invite scholars working in various realms of discourse research, ranging from textology and linguistics of discourse, through discourse analysis to (interdisciplinary) critical discourse studies. Our key purpose is to explore the various ways of doing discourse analysis, historically and presently.

The main topics include:

• historical traditions and evolutionary tendencies in (situated) discourse research in Europe; national, linguistic, regional, institutional and sub-disciplinary variation;
• current models of and orientations to ‘doing discourse’: foci, emphases, biases;
• the future of discourse research and discourse education in Europe in view of: fragmentation and specialization of discourse studies; rising interdisciplinarity of scholarship; globalization and English as lingua franca; market ideologies in research/education;
• discourse analysis, critical discourse studies and social critique in addressing key European issues today.
