In the wake of the international symposia at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in 1997, 2002 and 2008, and so many other important events organized by several Brazilian and foreign research teams which consolidate Discourse Analysis as a discipline, the IV International Symposium on Discourse Analysis, an initiative of the Discourse Analysis Nucleus (NAD) of the Faculty of Language and Literature of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, intends once more to be a space for debates and discussions between Brazilian and foreign professors, researchers, undergraduate and post-graduate students on one of the most relevant themes within contemporary world context, namely, the person that articulates discourse and social inequalities. The event comprises seminars, round-tables, individual and coordinated communications, mini-courses, posters and launching of books. The event will provide a wide range of types of participation to all and will reinforce the interdisciplinary characteristics of Discourse Analysis and its importance within Linguistic and Discursive Studies.

The Symposium´s central theme, dealing with discourse and inequality, is a broad and transdisciplinary subject. It will surely favor the participation of the different trends in discourse studies, language sciences and related disciplines. The theme involves issues related to socio-economical, ethnic, racial, gender, professional, political, juridical, religious, scientific, media, literary, publicity, linguistic diversity, familial, regional, geographic, identitarian, educational, architectural, urban inequalities and others. The relationship between discourse and inequality is underscored in contemporary debates, regardless of the geographical, national or cultural context, not only on the social plane, the external space for discourse production, but also on the internal, linguistic and enunciation one.

The IV International Symposium on Discourse Analysis intends to highlight these subject matters since it is an issue that comprises all social and human relationships, passing necessarily through discourse, language, conditions of production, emergence, resistance, circulation and representation. It will not be a mere discussion on social inequality in its political, ideological and economic aspects, albeit highly relevant, but the identification and investigation of the function and representation of inequality in and by language and its several ways of functioning within different discursive practices.

The Organizing Committee also expects that you advertise the Symposium invitation within your Institution and among your colleagues
