THE SOCIETY FOR PEACE STUDIES AND PRACTICE
Holds its’
5th ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND GENERAL ASSEMBLY
In Collaboration
With
THE INSTITUTE OF AFRICAN STUDIES
UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, IBADAN, NIGERIA
JUNE 27 - 29, 2011

Theme: Towards Sustainable Peace, Security and Development in Nigeria

The last two decades in the history of Nigeria has been characterised by different forms of violent eruptions: ethnic, religious, electoral and Niger Delta crises most especially. The adverse effects of all these problems (and their management) on the security and development of the Nigerian state do not seem to have been adequately studied by academic and policy analysts. This probably explains why the problems persist. The Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) in collaboration with the Peace and Conflict Studies Programme of the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria seeks to rigorously address this issue during the 5th Annual Conference and General Assembly of the SPSP slated for June 27-29, 2011 at the University of Ibadan.
The particular focus of the conference is on providing and debating alternative strategies for managing all of these crises in a way that could reduce tension in Nigeria. This emphasis is coming from the realisation that most of the conflict management techniques used by governmental and non-governmental organisations in the past have yielded too little positive outcomes. This explains why the Jos crisis has been escalating despite all that the government claims to be doing; it has to do with the increasing threat of Boko Haram crisis in Borno State and fear of electoral violence everywhere in the country. What conflict management strategies have been used at different locations so far? What worked and what failed to provide any sustainable results? What gaps are left to be filled? Who is responsible for filling these gaps? Any room for interagency collaboration?
In keeping with the tradition of SPSP Annual Conferences, we encourage proposals that focus on the conference theme as well as submissions on the array of under listed sub-themes typically relevant, but not limited to the Nigerian environment:
• Philosophical, Theoretical and Methodological Issues
